In Praise of Older Men

Hello again! I’m Alix Storm and I’m a new contributor to the blog. I wanted to thank everyone here for welcoming me and giving me the opportunity to chat with you. I’ll be blogging here a couple of times a month.

I’d like to talk about older men, and specifically older men in erotica. Have you read Rachel Boleyn’s excellent post here, called Who’s Your Daddy? http://onehandedwriters.com/2011/10/22/whos-your-daddy/  Her post fascinated me and I wanted to continue some of the points she made.

What is it about older men that grabs us? Is it the patience they exhibit? The strength and calm demeanor? The way they’re settled in their lives? The way they know what they want and aren’t afraid to grab it? Or is it the fact that these men represent authority?

Personally, I think it is a bit of all of these things!

I tend to write mostly older men/younger women stories, and I believe there is a huge market for these. Yes, much of the popularity is tied in to obvious familial authority figures—stepfathers, uncles, etc. However, that isn’t where the appeal begins and ends for me and many others.

The lure of reading about a younger woman who is taken by a man with maturity is a strong one for me. Older men are both virile and powerful, controlled, yet still sexy. And so many of them have staying power in the sack that men in their teens, and even twenties, haven’t achieved yet.  Older men have an enthralling combination of experience and patience that, when used to its best advantage, is almost too potent for some women. Give me a blurb where the hero and heroine are at least a decade apart and I’m hooked. Put that man in a position of control (business management, law enforcement, the military) and I go weak in the knees.

And I don’t think I’m alone here. Look at the Harris Poll. The top TV personality in 2010 and 2011 is an older man—Mark Harmon. This man was good looking in his twenties and thirties, but now, at sixty, he has so much character to his features. And clearly I’m not alone! His television show—NCIS—is a constantly strong performer and the number-one drama. Number two on the Harris poll list? Hugh Laurie, another man well over forty, who is tied with TV titan Oprah Winfrey.

Look at Harrison Ford, who starred in an Indiana Jones film at the age of sixty-six. Other popular celebrities over forty include Vin Diesel, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Robert Downey Jr., Johnny Depp, Will Smith, Ben Affleck, Antonio Banderas, Simon Cowell, Lance Armstrong, I could go on and on!

Can you imagine what our entertainment landscape would be without these men? Can you imagine what our reading landscape would be without older man/younger women books?

What are some of your favorite older man/younger woman erotica novels? Your favorite actors over forty?

  1. Great post, Alix. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again and again and again… Keith Carradine can put his body in my bed anytime he wants to!

  3. Ooh, man! Great post, Alix, and welcome!

I’m totally in love with Henry from Mad Men, more so than Don Draper himself! Something about a silver fox is sooo ridiculously sexy. I think it’s the distinguished features and experience combining to make a powerful erotic draw.

    Yum!
